Sundazed

drowsy summer afternoon
my lap reads the pages of my book

a tui chimes and chuckles
probing the scarlet
hanging with twisted neck
to drain each nectar cuplet
and thwart the earnest bees

lulled by sun and song
I dream
and waking, wish
my cheek at rest against your coat

remembering,
I sip the salty nectar
now trickling from my eyes

Arabs
say, all sunshine
makes a desert. Thank God
for clouds, squalls and nor-easterlies
with rain.

(No phone,
peace,
and time apart.)
