Reflections Beach Cottage

Tucked away under a shady pohutukawa tree in a quiet corner of the little seaside community of Whiritoa on the Coromandel Peninsula, this small beachside cottage looks out across a sleepy stream as it enters the Pacific Ocean.

Listen to the morning chorus of the birds as you sit up in bed with your first cuppa of the day. Become aware of the background booming of the surf rolling onto the beach, and watch the lagoon slide silently by against its backdrop of native bush.

Step through the gate onto the silver sands and take a walk along the ocean beach or the Moa Hunter Reserve before breakfast. Or wander over the bush-clad headland of the Ramarama Reserve to secluded Waimama Bay. Relax on the deck with a book, paddle upstream in your kayak, lie on the beach after a swim in the surf or lagoon, build a sandcastle, or try surfcasting from the beach to catch a tasty fish for dinner.

The ocean beach is popular with surfers, fishermen and swimmers (swim between the flags), while smaller children enjoy playing in and around the shallow lagoon under parental supervision.

There's no hustle and bustle in Whiritoa. It's as if you've stepped back in time to the seaside holidays of your childhood. The small general store can supply most things you might need, from groceries to fish hooks; from takeaway meals to sunblock. The Surf Club is open for a happy hour most summer evenings, and also organises various beach activities.

On the East Coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, Whiritoa is 12km south of Whangamata, and 16km north of Waihi.
